History of SAVH
Milestones from 1951 to the present
1951: Singapore Association for the Blind founded
1956: Singapore School for the Blind, now known as the
Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped
established
1963: Industrial Training Centre opened
1964: Sub-Committee of the Blind formed
1967: Open Education Programme started at Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School
1972: Sub-Committee of the Blind renamed White Cane Club
1978: Low Vision Clinic and Braille & Talking Book Library opened
1983: Hosted the Asian Conference on Visual handicap
1986: Association funded by the
Community Chest of Singapore
1987: Association renamed Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped
1989: Launch of present
logo
1990: Open Education Programme extended to four addition mainstream schools
1990:
Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped
came under the purview of the Ministry of Education
1999: White Cane Club became a branch of the Association
2001: Association celebrated its 50th Anniversary
2001: Established a Satellite Low Vision Clinic at the
Singapore National Eye Centre
2002: Association launched new Client Identification Card.
