The Holiday Camp

The White Cane Club is a branch of SAVH and was established in 1966. One of its objectives is to compliment the Association in providing for the social and recreational needs of visually handicapped members ranging from teenagers to the elderly. "What is so special about the Club?" many may ask. Well, unlike the many programs provided by the Association, the Club is fully run by a team of visually handicapped and sighted volunteers.

The White Cane Club also plays a vital role as the feedback organ of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped on matters relating to and affecting the visually handicapped.

It also offers an excellent opportunity for members to realize their potential and talents. Being run by a team of capable visually handicapped volunteers, it serves as a good training ground for grooming and developing leaders for the Association.

Many activities are held for its members this year. March 17 was a date which was keenly awaited by cycling enthusiasts. About 30 visually impaired members and sighted volunteers were gathered at the Association for an overnight cycling trip. Everyone was in high spirits as the ride begun at 10pm.

Late at night, the members reached Bukit Timah Rd, Bukit Batok, Jurong Island and West Coast where they rested and filled up their hungry stomachs. Due to the distance they have covered, the riders were growing tired. However, the sense of team spirit was getting ever stronger as they encouraged one another to continue on with the journey. Another recent trip organized was to Kukup. Like many typical Singaporeans, the members really ate to their hearts content.

There are, however, some members who are unable to join in the activities as much as they wanted to because they are homebound. However, the club has not forgotten them. Outings would be specially organized for them with transport provided to and from their homes.

The Club has functioned for 35 years. Its aim is to improve the lives of visually impaired persons in Singapore. So join the club as a member or volunteer and work together for the betterment of the visually handicapped members!
