Low Vision Clinic

What is a Low Vision Clinic?

Eye chart

A Low Vision Clinic is a specialized centre established to offer people with serious visual problems the benefit of scientific aids which are designed to maximise remaining vision whenever possible.

Who can benefit from Low Vision Clinic services?

Any person who has enough remaining vision to see newspaper headlines held at any distance within arm's length has a good prospect with special lenses. The amount of benefit gained will depend on remaining vision, one's motivation, goals and objectives.

How are the people helped by the Low Vision Clinic?

The Low Vision Clinic usually makes a full assessment of the health of our clients' eyes and based on the assessment, it can prescribe and supply special visual aids to enable a more efficient use of our clients' remaining vision. Although perfect vision is not restored, through the Low Vision Clinic, vision can be vastly improved.

What are Low Vision Aids?

Low Vision Aids

Low vision aids are special lens systems which provide the magnification necessary to improve vision that is no longer correctable with conventional glasses. However, they are of little assistance to people who can only distinguish light from dark, or only have shadow movement vision.

How does a person receive help from the Clinic?

A person with a serious visual disability which affects daily activities at home or on the job can contact the Clinic personally or through his or her Ophthalmologist or Optometrist at 6251 4331 ext. 142.

Who serves you at the Clinic?

Volunteer Consultant Ophthalmologists and Optometrists provide their professional services at the clinic.

How much are the services at the Clinic?

A nominal fee is charge to clients who are registered with the SAVH.  Private clients are charged at a cost with a small fee to cover administration services. Please refer to our fees table for further information

Operating hours: 8.00 am to 5.00 pm (Tuesday - Saturday)
